چکیده

We perform a low temperature Raman scattering study of phononic and collective spin excitations in the orthogonal dimers compound SrCu2!BO3"2, focusing on the symmetry and the effects of external fields on the magnetic modes. The zero field symmetry and the behavior in magnetic fields of the elementary and bound magnetic triplet states are experimentally determined. We find that a minimal 4-spin cluster forming the unit cell is able to describe the symmetry as well as the anisotropic dispersions in external fields of the spin gap multiplet branches around 24 cm−1. We identify two Raman coupling mechanisms responsible for the distinct resonance behavior of these magnetic modes and we show that one of these can be ascribed to an effective intradimer Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya spin interaction. Our data also suggest a possible explanation for the existence of a strongly bound two-triplet state in the singlet sector which has an energy below the spin gap. The low temperature phononic spectra suggest strong spin-phonon coupling and show intriguing quasidegeneracy of modes in the context of the present crystal structure determination.

Heat transport in SrCu2(BO3)2 and CuGeO3

In the low dimensional spin systems SrCu2(BO3)2 and CuGeO3 the thermal conductivities along different crystal directions show pronounced double-peak structures and strongly depend on magnetic fields. For SrCu2(BO3)2 the experimental data can be described by a purely phononic heat current and resonant scattering of phonons by magnetic excitations. A similar effect seems to be important in CuGeO3...

Collective Magnetic Excitations in SrCu2(BO3)2

Several properties make SrCu2(BO3)2 a unique and one of the most interesting quantum magnets [1]. This compound is a 2D spin system with a disordered ground state even at very low temperatures and a spin gap of about 24 cm (3 meV) in the magnetic excitation spectrum [1, 2]. It has been established that the elementary excitations in this system, which consist of a transition from the singlet (S ...

Theory of magnetization plateaux in the Shastry-Sutherland model.

Motivated by the remarkable properties of SrCu2(BO3) 2 in a magnetic field, we use perturbative continuous unitary transformations to determine the magnetization plateaux of the Shastry-Sutherland model, unveiling an unexpected sequence of plateaux progressively appearing at 2/9, 1/6, 1/9, and 2/15 upon increasing the interdimer coupling. We predict that a 1/6 plateau should be present in SrCu2...

High-resolution study of spin excitations in the singlet ground state of SrCu2(BO3)2.

High-resolution, inelastic neutron scattering measurements on SrCu2(BO3)2, a realization of the Shastry-Sutherland model for two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnets, reveal the dispersion of the three single triplet excitations continuously across the (H,0) direction within its tetragonal basal plane. These measurements also show distinct Q dependencies for the single and multiple triplet e...

In-gap spin excitations and finite triplet lifetimes in the dilute singlet ground state system SrCu(2-x)Mgx(BO3)2.

High resolution neutron scattering measurements on a single crystal of SrCu(2-x)Mgx(BO3)2 with x approximately 0.05 reveal the presence of new spin excitations within the gap of this quasi-two-dimensional, singlet ground state system. The application of a magnetic field induces Zeeman-split states associated with S=1/2 unpaired spins which are antiferromagnetically correlated with the bulk sing...
